Where did the battle take place?

Couldn’t the farmers have remained in the countryside and avoided the enormous losses? Perhaps they hoped for reinforcements from the north of the island, support from the citizens and protection behind the city wall of Visby.

We do not know exactly where the battle took place. Written sources speak of several different locations outside the walls.

The fact that so many in the peasant army died, and the nature of their wounds, indicates that they were unable to flee. Were the Danes so effective that the back lines had no time to panic and flee? Perhaps their loyalty to their neighbours and friends was so great that they held their ground.
