Thordeman – a prominent figure
Bengt Thordeman, who headed the most extensive excavations of the mass graves 1928-1930, was a versatile man and a prominent figure in Swedish cultural heritage. Medieval archaeologist, art historian and coin expert. From 1946 to 1952, he worked at the medieval department of the Swedish History Museum, and from 1952 to 1960 he served as Director General of the Swedish National Heritage Board
Thordeman wrote several books on the excavations of the mass graves. One oddity about these works is that they were written in English in a time when German was the dominant language in the field of archaeology.
He died in 1990, at the age of 97.
