Unique finds that have taught us a great deal
1905, 1912 and 1928-1930 are important dates that have helped us to understand the events of July 1361. The first mass grave outside Visby city walls was found in 1905.
Another grave was found in 1912. This and a further grave found in 1926 were excavated by medieval archaeologist Bengt Thordeman from 1928 to1930.
In addition to skeletons from nearly 1,200 individuals, he also found uniquely preserved pieces of armour, chain mail hoods, mail-clad gloves, arrow heads and other types of object.
The finds and the excavations have taught us a great deal, e.g. about medieval warfare and the use of various materials.
