Visby remains within the Hanseatic League
Despite King Valdemar’s superior victory and successful invasion of Gotland, Denmark does not appear to have had a firm grip on the island in the time thereafter. It seems as though life within Visby city walls returned to normal rather quickly, whilst the rural communities had to live with the effects for a long time.
The traders remained loyal to the German-funded Hanseatic League. In the following years, Visby is said to have paid tax to the Hanseatic League and thereby co-financed the trade organisation’s war on the Danish king.
Denmark held the formal power over Gotland for almost 300 years. Since the Peace of Brömsebro in 1645, Gotland has been Swedish.
