Were the gates of Visby closed to the farmers?
We do not know if the citizens actually shut out the farmers’ army. What happened after the battle at Mästerby on 24-25 July and up until the 27th when the battle was just outside the walls?
There are a number of possible scenarios:
1/ After the battle at Mästerby, the Danes chase the Gotlanders to Visby. The farmers’ remaining forces may have made for the town to meet reinforcements from northern Gotland. So as not to allow the peasant army time to retreat within the city walls, Valdemar attacked without delay.
2/ The farmers reached Visby before the Danes – and were let in. But why would they give up their protection to meet the enemy on open ground? A long siege would have meant starvation. Everyone within the walls had suffered greatly by the time the town was finally forced to surrender. Perhaps the farmers chose to leave the town and meet the enemy outside the wall?
3/ The citizens chose to keep the doors closed. Presumably so as not to be dragged into the battle. The citizens suspected that they would get off lightly due to their passivity. In modern research, the antagonism between farmers and Visby’s traders from the civil war of 1288 has been brought to light, as well as the fact that the conflict was behind the decision.
