From Stora Hellvigs, Fole parish, Gotland, 1300-1361 A. D. In the Middle Ages a fire was the primary source of light, but torches, tar sticks, candles and oil lamps were also used. Candles were made of tallow, but this was expensive and so tallow candles were used mainly on special occasions. SHM 21993:19
