Shield, wood, front

From Döderhult parish, Småland, 14th century. This shield has been stored for a long time in the tower room at the church in Kristdala. The shield belonged to either Lyder or Henrik Svinakula, who owned farms in the area in the 14th century. The shield has been used as a memorial coat of arms, but the construction corresponds with battle shields for this period. The shield is built with a wooden foundation. The foundation is constructed with several vertically composed wooden boards. The foundation is covered with a coarse linen fabric that has been treated with a chalk finish. The coat of arms has been painted with tempera.
