Square by square

When excavating the mass graves outside Visby city walls 1928-1930, the archaeologist Bengt Thordeman and his colleagues used methods that were modern at the time. The ground that was to be dug was divided into squares 50 x 50 cm with the aid of threads.

You can see one of these squares in the display case to the left. All the squares got their own letter designation. Lowercase horizontally and capitals vertically. This specific square is called “Quu”. Some items have been removed but it is otherwise untouched since 1361.

The material was documented with photographs and notes. See “Documentation” in the menu on the right. You can also view a news feature with Thordeman from 1940.
